The topic of the day: blogs. The assignment for the day: blog. PR instructor Melanie proceeded to show us her blog and the blogs she followed.

"Oh, here's one I love. You know when people use quotation marks incorrectly? Yeah... The "Blog" of "Unnecessary" Quotation Marks!"

The class laughed in unison as she scrolled down the blog, displaying photo submission entries where public signs mis-used quotation marks. I admit, I laughed too. Actually, I still do! I check that blog occasionally from time to time, only when bored and needing a good dose of random entertainment. Take a look for yourself, right here.

Take a look at this blog, The Grammar Vandal. It hasn't been updated in over a year, but she posts her own submissions, and reader contributions about bad spelling and grammar examples - in a comedic fashion.

I'm curious as to why we find these blogs so entertaining? I can admit, along with a few fellow CreComms, that I've been the victim of an autofail once or twice due to bad spelling/grammar. I, personally, felt pretty embarrassed and angry with myself. I was comforted, however, by the support of my fellow CreComms when I shared the solemn news.

Mystery CreCommer: "Lennie, what'd you get?"
Me: "Autofailed... *sad face*"
Mystery CreCommer: "Don't even worry about it, I autofailed the last two. This 6, even, is barely a pass!"

So why do we laugh? Is it the relief that we were not the ones victim to public scrutiny? Is it a reminiscent gesture that we, once, were that naive? Is it all just entertaining?

I guess these blogs have been produced to teach us a lesson - just like what we learn in class. I much more appreciate the blog copyblogger. Some of the titles sound harsh, but along with basic tips and lessons in terms of language, spelling and grammar, the blog shares some interesting points about professionalism overall. How to be politically correct on Twitter, What NOT to wear in an interview, How to be more search-engine available are all listed topics. Take a read!

OBVIOUSLY
I haven't updated in a while. Well, apparently. See, I don't understand if it's just me who is a little off the boat with diamonds? While slacking off from Final Cut Pro-ing my video Montage for T.V. Production class, I decided to read up on my Popular news on Yahoo. You can read the article I found here, announcing that a rare 5.16 carat blue diamond sold for 6.4 million US dollars 2 days ago in Hong Kong. The original price of purchase was estimated at 5.9 million dollars US. Not as much, but still pretty much insane.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S7867qX2ceI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/xluU6HHPelg/s320/blogdia.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458146070057349602"/>So what 's the deal with diamonds? According to the article, another blue diamond sold for 10.5 million just last may, and is currently the world per-carat record holder for a blue diamond. The overall world per-carat record holder for a diamond in general? A "five-carat chickpea-sized vivid pink gem" for 10.8 million just this past December. What is it with diamonds?

Remember all the hype about JLO's pink diamond engagement ring from then-fiance Ben Affleck? Remember their break-up? I remember magazine upon magazine cover questioning, "Who gets the ring?" Or "Will she keep the ring?" etc. etc. Anyone Remember Paris Hilton's short-lived engagement? That ring got waay more attention than the groom himself. Throughout their entire engagement, the 24-carat ring produced questions such as, "The ring is a fake?", "Family does not want Paris to give Paris a genuine ring?", "Relationship doomed: Ring unnecessary?" And even after their break-up, the ring was still making stories, as the 4.7 million dollar ring was auctioned off by Paris for Hurricane Katrina Relief. It sold for 2 million dollars.

I pretty much blew up when I read this article, questioning who in their right mind would spend so much on a piece of jewelery. I, myself, have the worst luck with jewelery. From losing a diamond ring in a public pool, to tangling a necklace to the point of no return, to splitting the chains of a bracelet because it caught on a shirt rack - I have the absolute worse luck. Then I realized that people probably question all of my spending habits. People can think of my purchases as "Who in their right mind would spend X amount on X item?" I realize my choices are foolish and at times, ridiculous, but in all they're my choices.

So as the year creeps closer and closer to a close, I just want to remind everyone that fashion is their own state of mind. It's what you want and what you want it to be. Ciao.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: SOO NOT LAST SEASON?
Hello? Anywhoo, remember Justin Timberlake? He released Future Sex/Love Sounds, went on tour (which BTW, one of the best concerts of my life), was in a few movies, then did a lot of featured vocals on a number of Timberland and Nelly Furtado tracks? Where has he gone!? I think I heard one of his songs on the radio last week and I was slightly bummed that the only thing we've seen of the Prince of Pop lately has been relationship rumors and his signature voice on Tiberland's tracks.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S7ya9G0nVTI/AAAAAAAAAJw/rkl5UYCtk_8/s320/jt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457407223060190514"/>Have no fear, JT is back! Bare back? Bed sheet? Red lipstick? Hair disheveled? CNN? Regardless, if you don't remember, you should take note of the famous photographer who was literally behind the eyes of the scandal. The very talented Annie Leibovitz has worked with Vanity Fair since 1983, and has shot the likes of Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, and Miley Cirus as said.

Word has just gotten out now that she has been facing a number of financial issues, and after hiring a consulting firm to identify potential investments, she forgot to pay them. The famous phot-og is now facing a lawsuit for forgetting to pay about $803 000 to the investment firm.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S7qhSnDWzlI/AAAAAAAAAJY/hbht8kViUFI/s320/ry" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456851239605554770"/>
PHOTO: Caitlin MacGregor

On a side note, I will be increasing the number of blog posts this week, because as you can see, I've been a little MIA. Blame the RRC Magazine Fair! A magnificent collection of magazine displays presented by the ever-so-talented CreComm first years. This said magazine is the product of months upon months, weeks upon weeks, days upon days, hou... (you get it) of work. We were divided into groups to make a magazine, all contributing to our Creative Writing, Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations and Electronic Publishing marks! With the help of the talented Jess Chapman and Jeff Ward our group created Rebel Yell, an activism magazine. Hoorah, we won Best Content! For your copy of Rebel Yell, please throw a loonie our way and we'll be happy to send you a PDF. I'm not sure what creative juices they're on, but it's definitely not in the water that I'm drinking.

Take this ad for AT&T for example. The ad shows carefully painted detailed works of art onto the hands and arms of the models holding their phones. I am seriously scared for my income status, fully knowing that the new items can be cause of serious harm to my bank account. The last week or two, Aritzia has been clearing out their sale merchandise and making room for all the new stuff for the season! Come check it out. We know Vera Wang and Rachel Bilson both have.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 132px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S4VbEMMMGMI/AAAAAAAAAIg/5rQuNTRSthM/s200/blog02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441855852297066690"/>It's true! While I was working at Vancouver's Robson Street location, I was talking with a customer at how the woman at the front of the store had to be Vera Wang, dress designer to the biggest Hollywood stars and close friend of Oprah. I approached my temporary Associate Manager and told her she was in the store. Sandy replied, "She does look like Vera Wang, doesn't she?" I said, "It's her!" We got the attention of our Merchandise Manager and we approached her. She ended up walking away with our Community parka (exact same as mine!) and a bunch of dressy Wilfred items, and TNA Canada and Parklife items in spirit of the Olymipcs. Thank you, ma'am!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 142px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S4VbJ-a70QI/AAAAAAAAAIo/w56-AUtodLs/s200/blog03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441855951680033026"/>
Also visiting our store was Rachel Bilson. She is in town with her Canadian-born fiance, Hayden Christensen! I, sadly, was a few days late of her visit, but she picked up a bunch of great stuff! I hope everyone received the rest they deserved. I definitely did not. My week was spent working with my head cut off, followed by partying down the streets of Robson and Granville in downtown Vancouver. Man, I miss it already.

Following up with some Olympic related news, CTV published an article yesterday regarding the cease of a CBC Canadian flag giveaway. The full article can be viewed here, at www.ctvolympics.ca. Basically, CBC was giving away free Canadian flags to passers-by. Harmless, right? Wrong. The problem was CBC's distinctive corporate logo appeared on the back of the flags. The CBC building location neighbours Canada Hockey Place, in which it is verboten to brandish a corporate logo.

I guess attendees just wanted to avoid paying the $4.00 for a Canadian flag? Which is exactly what I paid on Cypress Mountain. I'll be heading to Vancouver to work for Aritzia on Robson and watching some Olympic snowboarding! Thank you, Mr. President!

Before I finally jet off, did you know that not only did Aritzia make the award presenters their uniforms, they designed the ribbons that actually carry the medals? Yes, the gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals are brilliantly displayed on winning athlete's necks with the help of an Aritzia designed ribbon? Pretty cool! The design is inspired by a sea-to-sky type of colour pallette. Here's a few of early Olympic winners wearing their medals - and Aritzia!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 146px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S3jel3W8cII/AAAAAAAAAIY/O4K7sqgMlIU/s200/febblog01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438341292146585730"/>Take care guys, and enjoy your breaks! With a lot of dedication the show, fans are imitating the iced and gel heavy hair, the barely-there booty shorts, the True Religion jeans and the Ed Hardy t-shirts (which, btw, I thought both were over with?).

I guess with life today evolving and changing so quickly, if you are capable of grabbing attention, you must take this as an opportunity to express yourself and your influence? Sure, personally I don't agree with the style of Jersey Shore, as much as I am oddly drawn to the television series - but if you're getting noticed, why not be noticed for acting and dressing as yourself. This is definitely better than projecting a fake image (gag). Take Jenni (JWOWW) Farley, for example, who is using her new found fame to launch her own clothing line. Jiminy cricket. Still though, "big ups" to the Jersey Shore crew, best of luck on your future endeavours hehe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 186px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S2vEgjEmwqI/AAAAAAAAAIA/MPWj7V6pJaQ/s320/blog05.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434653438802051746"/>As a last snippet, come visit your local Aritzia! PLUS iPad ACCESSORIES?
With much light shed on the recent release of Apple's iPad, I've come to question how revolutionary the tool is. So far, we've gone from desktops, to laptops, to smartphones or other hand held devices.

With the idea of technology only getting smaller, I wonder how this step up in size affects the direction in technology. Sure, it's revolutionary, and the uses for the iPad are probably endless. I wouldn't know, I mean I've been reluctant to give in to the Apple brand until as of late so looking up the perks hasn't been a priority. But the flat, thin, barely-10-inch device does not appeal to me.

The evolution of technology is amazing, and I just find having to sell and addition keyboard or an addition stand/protector is back tracking a little bit. (I just had an awkward thought of the iPad having one of those attached fold-out stands you find in traditional picture frames... That was awkward and embarrassing.)

Am I being a little green? Hesistant? Closed minded? They also present awards for workmanship, style and high sales.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S16kvCK40RI/AAAAAAAAAHo/HFF15MZ8a78/s320/IMG_4577.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430959328598741266"/>Above is a picture of a few of my store at the GSM this past summer in Vancouver. My store belongs to the WEST district, in which we fly a number of our staff to Vancouver overnight to participate in the meeting. Since working at Aritzia, I have been given the privliege to attend every meeting since we've opened.

Due to our company's dedication to the Olympics, our meeting has been cancelled. At first I was completely upset and aggrivated, and I voiced my opinions quite vocally to my store manager. Then I realized how rude I was being. Our company is an active part in something so historical. It is rare to be able to take part in such an opportunity. In addition, in times of a recovery from the economic recession, it only makes sense to be weary of our budgets.

Aritzia is a Canadian company, and has been very successful from this point. They've even generously invited me to work for them during the Olympics - covering my air, hotel and food expenses. I realize that I've been way to greedy, and in terms of any job or career for that matter, you have to support the decisions of what you're working for. Nothing else would make me more upset then going day by day at a job you truly dislike.

So if you hear me complaining about my job at all, tell me to shut up. Remind me that I should be grateful. Inform me about my greedyness. I can take it. Questions ranged from the last books we've read, to the last video games we've played, to the last movies we've watched and so on and so forth.

The survey made me feel, for lack of a better word, embarrassed. Although I see myself as a person who regularly "ingests" creativity, I haven't found myself doing it lately.

The survey got me thinking, and I believe it helped make me realize that to be able to explore your own creative thinking, you have to explore creativity on its own. I've noticed that especially in my Creative Writing class, I will litterally be on a writer's block for hours upon hours or even days upon days, due to the lack of creative stimulation.

Lately, I've been so busy, the last book I was in the process of reading now lays dust-ridden on my bed-side table (And I haven't read it in so long, I'll need to start from the beginning to remind myself of the actual story). I haven't watched a new movie in months, and my classic favorites are usually on repeat and in the background if I need some "T.V. music" while doing homework. T.V. itself has been a loss for me, as I consume mindless reality television, like Jersey Shore, or The Real World only, once again, as a background filler late at night when I have to stay up late and do homework. If anything, my only newest T.V. exploration has been that of glee, in which now I want to include a musical twist into everything I compose. Lastly, I never realized but I've only liked video games I know I'm good at - that'd be the beat-stricken type games where "musicality" and timing coming into play. I've never really taken the opportunity to explore and learn a completely new concept video game.

I write this as a promise to myself: to experience more creative things. With being so busy, I never thought that missing out on these things would affect me, but it definitely has. Already, I've made time to see a movie this Sunday! Who knew that refreshing the creative thinking process would be so fun?

IN THE CHAMBER 2010: LAST MEN

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S1fQ0GXhobI/AAAAAAAAAHg/xqEevYou4u4/s320/b00.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5429037469299483058"/>Upon entering the Rachel Browne Theatre, I was a little hesitant about the play we were assigned to watch last Friday. The play, entitled In The Chamber 2010: Last Men, is the fifth of a collective series. It was made up of two separate monologues, each lasting about an hour. Although the settings and characters are different between the two, the context is relatively the same. Both focus on the Human Factor Analysis, and the inner struggle with one's self.

The first half was titled Last Man in Krakendorf, performed by Gordon Tanner. This would have to be the one I enjoyed the most. Tanner depicts a man fed up wit his current life, and the position he currently holds, being a complete bystander (and even in some ways accomplice) to a hog barn fire. The monologue develops, first, as a video presentation to his boss in order to reflect change in his company. With each slide, however, he discovers more and more about himself. Each slide of his presentation becomes a revelation of his true identity.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. Tanner successfully captures the audience's attention, performing a monologue with various points of struggle and tension. I believe I enjoyed this more for the sole purpose that it seemed more relatable. I'm pretty sure we've all had a moment where we've looked back and haven't been proud of our behaviours. You don't need to necessarily go out of your way to participate in "bad" acts, but does it help if all we do is stand by? Tanner realises this, and in effort to produce change, he makes the video - and beats a guy up to a bloody pulp. Regardless, I found the first half completely entertaining.

The second half, Last Man in Puntarenas was performed by Steven Ratzlaff. Ratzlaff is accompanied by Tanner on stage, although he doesn't talk until nearly the end. Ratzlaff, however, entertains his guests at his retirement party (symbolized by balloons). He discusses the loss of his son, the end of his marriage, and his involvement in the sex trade industry. With each disturbing revelation, the balloons were comically untied off the chairs and walked off stage.

Although, also, a piece of self reflection and struggle, I failed to receive the piece as I did Tanner's. Ratzlaff is a brilliant actor, able to even bring the balloons to life solely with his interaction, but due to a lot of the context of his speech and personal experiences, I was unable to relate. It did, however, make me feel like one of his guests. Uncomfortable and awkward, and all I wanted to do was be taken away. I say this in the most respectable way, of course. The piece was supposed to make someone open their eyes and feel disturbed by the actions of even the people we think we know. Ratzlaff's example would be, for one, feeling sexually attracted to a few of his high school students.

Regardless, the actors were brilliant. They successfully told their stories, and were able to reveal an extensive background leading up to their scenes. What's additionally impressive is the fact that each of the actors had 3 weeks to produce this performance. Cheers to Tanner and Ratzlaff - they were great.

OBAMA FOR WEATHERPROOF
Obama is the new face of Weatherproof outerwear... too bad he didn't know it! This is because the ad misleads by suggesting it was approved by Obama or the White House, which has a long-standing policy disapproving of the use of Obama's name and likeness for commercial purposes.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 293px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S0rHfqH3mTI/AAAAAAAAAHY/yLBKSX5SrFE/s320/obama01.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425368047818348850"/>Read the complete article here, President as pitchman: Obama image used in ad.

PARKLIFE FOR ARITZIA
Requested by the Olympic Committee, Aritzia's product and design team was selected to design certain uniforms for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Although small, the Canadian-born company has designed the uniforms for the "flower presenters" - the ones who hold the medals and present the flowers to the event winners on the podium.

As part of this effort, Aritzia developed the brand PARKLIFE, a line completely dedicated to the 2010 Olympics. The line has been exclusive to Aritzia stores for a few years now, and with the Olympics right around the corner, product and brand development has grown.

Sadly, there was one snag to a specific item featured in the brand. Visit your local Aritzia and you will see that the PARKLIFE brand has a dedication to the history of the Olympics. One way this is displayed is by the many designs of knee-high gym socks. Each individually sold pair is a different colour and has a different design dedicated to different Olympic Games ie. Calgary, Salt Lake City, and of course, Vancouver.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S0behTdMn6I/AAAAAAAAAHI/7JbcrOg-_ZI/s320/a00.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424267464954126242"/><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/S0bep08zhFI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/H_RqtvLYa5c/s320/a01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424267611384022098"/>If you didn't notice, YES, there it is. An auto-fail spelling error, in which the "U" was left out of "VANCOUVER." The admirable and surprising thing that the company has done was immediately changed the production of the socks, but they have not decided to pull the specific pair of gym socks off the floor. So if you're on the look for an even more of a special purchase to commemorate the 2010 Olympic Games grab a pair of discontinued socks! They sure are special!

RECOVERING FROM BOXING <strike>DAY</strike> WEEK
I have previously said that Boxing Day is my favorite day to work when working in retail. We are prepared, and aware of the excited customers looking for the perfect (or not-so-perfect) deal. At my store, everyone is assigned a position and trained as to how to organize and operate their sections. A little excessive it may be, but it comes in handy. For the second year in a row, I was a fitting room seller - my fave. People on Boxing Day come knowing they want to spend money, and I enjoy helping people find the perfect item to spend their hard earned cash on.

Boxing Week, however, has always been a tad more difficult. The day after Boxing Day is referred to as D-Day at our store, as it is the day we are allowed to accept returns and exchanges as well as price adjustments. Frustration, anger, stress - a few words that can be used in relation to this day. We approached that day in the same fashion as Boxing Day - a team, attemping to overcome a goal of a large sum of returns and negative sums.

Today, however, was completely individual - and completely chaotic. What's the same? Returns? Yes. Exchanges? Yes. Team? No. I lost it today, completely overwhelmed with customers, some who were not only looking for a deal, but looking for a quiet time at the mall! One not at all as chaotic as Boxing Day or the day after. Boy were they wrong. A sea of people looking for sales, looking to return, looking to get angry. I apologize if this more sounds like a "rant," but I do not understand customers who go out of their way to be mean and angry and rude. We're just trying to do our job. We're just trying to make a living. We're just trying to do what we have been taught and trained to do.

Then I realized that this is how life is and this is what will happen - especially if I plan on going into P.R. No one's giving me a free pass and being nice just to be nice. I can try all I want, or even cry all I want, but that doesn't have to change anything. Regardless if you're thrown a bad hand, it's up to you to make the most of what you have. After dealing with a rude customer (rude for no apparent reason) I had to take a deep breath and put it all behind me. Because one negative person shouldn't have to drag you down or heavily influence how you feel. So I have realized one of my resolutions for the new year: to leave negativity behind me. To not sweat the small stuff, and to not let people who do not matter hurt me. Hope you guys will help me in working towards this effort. Thanks.

ALPHA PRIME ONE
I guess this is my Alpha Prime One goodbye, even though I'll technically still be in Section 1 next term. Designers release their items for further sale for just a certain number of hours, which can be notified to you through e-mail if you please. Items range from bags, to baby clothing, to make up, and women and men's clothing! There is also a wide variety of brands from Coach, stila, Seven for all Mankind, just to name a few! As a relief from stress, I shamefully jumped on to view the sale on Marc by Marc sunglasses. The pair above were each 69 per cent off, lowered to $37 from $120! The sad part is, however, I couldn't decide on colour... So I got both. Not too much saving there for Lennie! This is a result of the late evenings, early mornings, and overwhelming work load I've had to endure. If anyone remembers my previous post, I was excitedly awaiting the Victoria's Secret annual Christmas runway show. No words can express how deeply sad I am... Except, "Nooooooo," which is the exact quote I expressed when waking up at nearly 11PM last night.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/Sxayiw7qn2I/AAAAAAAAAGo/ubEoGvW2dUQ/s320/vs01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410708312652685154"/>
In regards to the show, which my friends have PVR'ed for my viewing pleasure, I did remember to follow up on the Victoria's Secret Angel Search. Nearly 10 000 of young, gorgeous women applied for a chance to be one of the new faces of Victoria's Secret. Not only would this include walking in the annual show, but starring in many of their ad campaigns. Angels include Marisa Miller, Heidi Klum and retiree Tyra Banks. The new addition to the Angel family is Kylie Bisutti. Beautiful!

The show revealed Bisutti with one other finalist. Question is: Does coming in second place and losing improve self-esteem or lower it? In other words, in such a widely viewed competition, how do people in this position approach this situation? Glass half-empty? Glass half-full? It comes to say that one can be so happy for exceeding thousands upon thousands of girls in this competition, but falling so short of her lingerie, filled dream. What to do?

TWITTER AND FASHION: A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
It appears that the first year CreComm students are not the only ones jumping on the Twitter band wagon. From fashion staple Karl Lagerfeld to fresh-fashion-face Prabal Gurung, the tweets are endless. With fashion, it's all about who sees it first, who hears it first, and who wears it first.

These guidelines appear to have quite the connection to the techniques of PR. The ability to connect and communicate first is a must, especially in times of a PR "crisis."

Also consider the importance of information from a credible source, visual aids and reaching a desired public. Important in fashion, important in PR, and available through Twitter!

Read the article and see how the fashion industry uses Twitter to their advantage. Today we spent the first two hours at the college creating Twitter accounts and exploring the Twitter world. I had already created an account, and if you visit my first tweet ever, I joined solely for CreComm purposes. It can be seen here at my Twitter account, lennieanne. Just like blogging, however, I noticed that I slowly had to get my "tweet-groove" going. I would tweet, maybe, once a day or every two days, and they happened to be very irrelivant. I don't know if it happens to be a CreComm revelation, but after listening to Melanie explain the opportunities one has with Twitter, I began adding and tweeting like a mad woman. My list of Twitter members that I'm following just doubled, and the members following me tripled (then again they happen to be my fellow Section 1-ers).

This compares to my blogging experience. As stated in my previous post, I would barely blog. Now, however, even when I spot something interesting, or discus something interesting, or come across anything that interests me I just can't wait to blog about it. The wonders of CreComm and Web 2.0!

I've decided to change my apporach to blogging and tweeting. This isn't only about personal networking, it's about social networking. Rather than keep everything personal, I must explore local and social options. For example, because this is a fashion blog, I don't have to only blog about my fashion interests - which is what I've been doing! I have to be a little more proactive and discuss Winnipeg news and current issues and what's in the media! I've been to narrow minded, and in CreComm that's definitely a "no-no." So if I once again begin to trend into a too "personal" view point, let me know! I don't expect you to slap my hands when indulged on a keyboard and have you scold "Bad, Lennie." A friendly reminder would suffice. Thanks, friends!

BLOG ASPIRATIONS
I admit, upon receiving this blog as a CreComm requirement, I slowly began my decsent into the world of blogging. I would only blog a couple times a month, believing my blog to be basically pointless and slightly embarrassing. Now, however, I find this outlet to be incredibly useful and entertaining. In addition, the ability to express your point-of-view (regardless of the number of readers or not) has been suprisingly liberating. With this in mind, I've started to follow quite a number of blogs with various content. This being a fashion blog, however, I will only mention a few fashion blogs I've come to love.

Bryanboy is a former web developer from the Philippines who began blogging at the age of 17 from his home in Manila. Since then, he has developed into a fashion icon, attracting over 180 000 visitors to his blog per day, and has become such a recognized fashion figure he is well known to the fashion community (ie. he was personally invited to the Victoria's Secret Fashion show and has a Marc Jacobs bag named after him!). What's impressive is his ability to "take over" the online fashion world. Although there is quite a bit of Asian influence in fashion, it is incredibly difficult for that of Filipino nature. Fashion of the Philippines, afterall, is a bit more conservative and traditional. Bryanboy, however, has been able to make his mark in the industry, and yet is so level headed he openly posts his home and cell phone numbers on his blog! Risky but too cool!

Style Rookie, previously known as The New Girl in Town, is a blog so professional it was believed to have been written by industry professionals. The blog, however, is strictly the product of a fashion-loving 13 year old. Tevi Gevinson began blogging at the age of 11 from her suburban Chicago home, and has since become such an icon she has acquired over 50 000 followers. She has appeared on various magazine covers, has met many "big names" in the industry as well celebrities, and has been personally invited to events such as New York Fashion Week. Do I need to say why this blog is so impressive? She's 13 years old! When I was 13, my biggest dilemma was figuring out whether or not Dance or Drama would be my grade nine elective. Not to mention the fact, however, she has adorable style and is completely in-tune with her designers and the trends.

As a last desperate plea, I am searching for someone to please order this bag for me online with their credit card! I will fully provide you with the cash, my credit card just happens to be M.I.A! This may seem completely irrelivant and "pathetic," but I first laid my eyes on this incredibly cute bag when it was ordered for one of our customers at the store. Since it arrived, however, it is now completely sold out in the entire company! Upon visiting the Red River Campus at Notre Dame, a few of my fellow section one girls realized that guys wearing cologne simply make a difference. I find that the little extra effort can make all that extra difference. Regardless if this seems pointless or unimportant, it was just a quick thought that I wish to express to the rest of the world. I don't stand alone in this front, though. I'd like to see what other people think. Yes? No? Neutral?

On a side note, take a look at all the fragrance and cologne ads that run now a days. I touched point on this during my "Good Ad/Bad Ad" experience. I will be posting various fragrance ads in the near future, and I'd like to hear your opinions! The world's most beautiful models stomping it out on the runway in extremely animated and pricey lingerie, who wouldn't want that? The show itself doesn't air until the first of December. If this event is unfamiliar to you, Victoria's Secret airs a Christmas-themed fashion show of lingerie radically enhanced with wings, glitter and crystals. A tid-bit that might trigger your memory was the Victoria's Secret Fashion show that aired I believe two or three years ago, which marked the retirement of runway diva Tyra Banks.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwWmswalXhI/AAAAAAAAAF4/AOz7P9LTlYk/s320/01blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405910215569006098"/>Honest question though: does appreciating this show or finding it entertaining push my feminist beliefs back 10 years? Or not. Burberry has been attempting to branch out from their signature beige cross-plaid pattern (known as the Haymarket check) for sometime, especially since the hire of Rose Marie Bravo from the United States. Bravo approached her position as a rebranding of the line, attempting to sway public view of the brand from just simply raincoats and the signature pattern to a high fashion line. Bravo recruited young starlet and fashionista, Emma Watson, and controversial international model, Kate Moss, as faces for the brand.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 284px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwW18Kuk60I/AAAAAAAAAGQ/pzA_tI_ZZ6Q/s320/03blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405926973004639042"/>To their disappointment, Norwegian artist Jens Werner has decided to paint the entire exterior of his home with the famous Burberry Tartan design. The disappointment mainly originates from the constant re-issuing of the Burberry design from shoes, to backpacks, to even baseball caps! Burberry became famous for its raincoats after the label was commissioned by the War Office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare. After the war, the garment became popular with civilians, eventually expanding into an international fashion brand.

"THIS IS OUR GESTURE OF DEFIANCE TO THE TALIBAN"
Here's an amazing article about Pakistan celebrating their first Fashion Week, found on a Yahoo Article for the Associated Press. It's just a remarkable accomplishment for Pakistan to successfully hold an event of this kind, especially with their history. According to the article written by Chris Brummitt, the event was postponed twice due to security issues. Here's more information:

KARACHI, Pakistan – Some women strode the catwalk in vicious spiked bracelets and body armor. Others had their heads covered, burqa-style, but with shoulders — and tattoos — exposed. Male models wore long, Islamic robes as well as shorts and sequined T-shirts.

As surging militant violence grabs headlines around the world, Pakistan's top designers and models are taking part in the country's first-ever fashion week. While the mix of couture and ready-to-wear fashions would not have been out of place in Milan or New York, many designers made reference to the turmoil, reflecting the contradictions and tensions coursing through this society.

The four-day event, which was postponed twice due to security fears and amid unease at hosting such a gathering during an army offensive in the northwest, is aimed at showing the world there is more to Pakistan than violence and at helping boost an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people, organizers said.

Many of the models, designers and well-heeled fashionistas packing out each night said the gathering was a symbolic blow to the Taliban and their vision of society, where women are largely confined to the house and must wear a sack-like covering known as a burqa.

"This is our gesture of defiance to the Taliban," said Ayesha Tammy Haq, the CEO of Fashion Pakistan Week. "There is a terrible problem of militancy and political upheaval ... but that doesn't mean that the country shuts down. That doesn't mean that business comes to a halt."

The shows are taking place in Karachi, the country's largest and most cosmopolitan city, in a five-star hotel just next door to the American consulate, which was bombed by Islamist militants in 2002. It's two hours by plane from the northwest, the heartland of al-Qaida and the Taliban, and has largely been spared the violence sweeping the country over the last month.

"Unfortunately, it is the bad side of Pakistan that gets everybody's attention," said top Pakistani model Nadia Hussain as hairdressers and makeup artists fussed over her backstage. "It has never been this bad, I don't know what will happen," she said, as fellow models chain-smoked cigarettes.

While many of the city's 12 million people live in slums, hip cafes and restaurants in wealthy neighborhoods draw sophisticated crowds of young men and women into the early hours, more often than not speaking English with each other and wearing Western dress.

While the shows in Karachi resembled fashion weeks in other parts of the world, there were no foreign designers or buyers. The organizers decided not to invite them given the precarious security situation.

"Who is going to come here with such negative stuff going on?" said Tabassum Mughal, a young designer who employs about 30 people. "Those who are here already are leaving."

Textiles make up some 60 percent of Pakistan exports and are worth around $12 billion dollars a year. The country's cotton and silks are among the finest in the world. But the industry has failed to grow in recent years amid political unrest, violence and chronic power shortages.

As if on cue, a power cut during the fashion week's opening evening left the hall in darkness for several minutes.

The fashion industry represents a tiny fraction of the country's textile exports.

"We are still doing the 30 dollar a dozen T-shirt business. There is no value added," said Haq. "We should be employing millions of people, not hundreds of thousands of them."

Designers presented a mix of clothes, some drawing on traditional Pakistani outfits and tribal motifs, others that had little or no sign of traditional aesthetics. In a culture where nearly all women dress modestly, many outfits were too racy for local tastes.

"This does not represent what we are as a people," designer Ayesha Tahir Masood said. "Only 0.001 percent of Pakistani women would wear these clothes, and then only in a controlled environment when drunk out of their minds."

Another article found on Yahoo Fashion News summarizes Rhianna as one of the recent receipients of Glamour Magazine's Women of the Year. Rhianna is praised for her recent and public stand against domestic violence after her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown, this past February. Rhianna joins nine other women and women achievments in this years' awards, including First Lady Michelle Obama and historically-linked Maya Angelou. Take a read at these amazing women and their accomplisments.

Lastly, here's my Lookbook pick of the day. I love it, and it's everything I love about dressing for fall! Now if only we can determine if she was actually warm? This also makes me miss my bangs, but I've been told blunt bangs make me look young. Till next time, friends!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwNXVmmY6dI/AAAAAAAAAFw/dT_CJ88I93s/s320/03fallblog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405260006425160146"/>

A FASHIONABLY RELAXED WEEKEND
I don't know if it comes with age, if it's the result of a hectic CreComm lifestyle, or if it's the daily grind of working a full time job, but I've come to appreciate my days and evenings off. My summer was filled with going out, "partying" till the wee hours of the morn. A routine of waking up early, working one or two jobs, going out right after work, going out to eat after going out, going home, waking up early again... it was tiring. Lately, I've still been able to enjoy a few of my weekends (when not submerged under school work), but rather than the loud and crowded bar scene I opt for something a bit more relaxed. I've come to appreciate the simplicity of a relaxed good time. I'm fairly tired, but here's a quick recap of the weekend I had (and more photos will surface in time).

After working a fairly slow 8 hours at work on Saturday, I started off (lame I know) playing with contrast and colour on Adobe Photoshop. I have to learn how to up my Photoshop game, and train to be an Adobe "master" like my good Section 1 friend, Bre. In all honesty, I was waiting for my good friend John to finish cleaning his house.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 231px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwD3q2UMHSI/AAAAAAAAAEw/MFSdfKfiAsE/s320/02dinnerweekend1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404591868351356194"/>John was preparing for an Aritzia reunion for Sunday. He cleaned his place and did some grocery shopping prior to his day of cooking. His fridge is my bestfriend - everything I'd wish to have in mine (with exception of the Silk brand soymilk).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwD5GYRx7vI/AAAAAAAAAE4/E3i6p_ySUEw/s320/00.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404593440836153074"/>We decided to watch a movie and settled on "The Box." I applaud the movie for keeping one's attention, but it wasn't for me. I don't know if I'd consider this a "spoiler" or what not, but I would rather have my movies provide me with an actual ending. As long as the movie was, it felt like only received half of what the story should have been. Watch it and tell me what you think, but I would suggest this science-fiction thriller as a rental item. In addition, here is $30 worth of food, and we barely ate it. Two pond-sized drinks, popcorn bigger then my head, nachos that could feed three, and two bags of candy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwD6CYjAyCI/AAAAAAAAAFA/sgESDUhNqWA/s320/02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404594471700580386"/>Sunday was incredibly busy at work, and Santa arrived at the mall today (looking suprisingly skinny if I may add) igniting the Christmas spirit. After selling till my feet fell off, I headed to John's for the Aritzia dinner party. I love his apartment, and the food looked great.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwD8ScATBmI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/ePOKLyQ6JI0/s320/03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404596946529879650"/><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SwD8dPZtNnI/AAAAAAAAAFY/kmqj0ol_95Y/s320/04.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404597132125353586"/>After waay too much food, a lot of time catching up, and good conversation, we started to take a pictures... A lot of pictures. The season is young though, and with Holidays and New Years coming up, you never know what opinions can change ;D. I'm pretty sure, though, not everyone has lost themselves in the party-version weekend, so I'd like to know what everyone else does on their valued days off. I'm looking for new ideas, because bar nights are behind me. What are the new weekend trends? Till next time!

IT HURTS TO SPEND
I originally began this blog with the intention of introducing my new babies (err... purchases). I remember my brothers face when I walked through the door, the signature leather-protectant storage bag in hand. "Really, Lennie? Another bag?" he asked. My heart sank. My spending tendencies are ridiculous, so I made a promise to myself, and I'm asking all you out there to act as witness. I will refrain from over spending, and if I do happen to break this rule, I will expend a personal donation for a greater cause. Today, after realizing that the only one pleased with my new bag purchase was myself, I began to clean my room and has now separated a fair ammount of clothing for donation. I really hope after posting this promise I become more proactive. I will continue to document any progress in this act, and please, share your ideas! No, the answer isn't because we only have about four weeks of classes left for this term, but because I finally have some time! Opting out of one of my classes has actually provided me with a fair ammount of time, and I am pleased! Today, however, required an 8am due time for a few of our journalism assignments. Sadly, I wasn't able to make it here last night, so here I am, after handing in said assignments, killing time until my seminar/first class at 11.

So what's a girl to do with some time on her hands? Rather than finishing up some homework or catch up on some sleep, this girl has decided to do some online shopping. Upon reviewing one of my favourite sites I realized this information would be far more valuable if I shared it to the public, so here is one of my favourite not-so-secret sites.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 145px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SvwbI1X73iI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/Z8aP9Kob7TQ/s200/blog01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403223491518127650"/><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 145px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/SvwbLOxW2-I/AAAAAAAAAEY/0NEpQo-E-LI/s200/blog02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403223532695378914"/>Although shipped from the United States, gojane.com has such low prices for their items, they'll be cheaper than the regular retail store with shipping and duty costs included! Personally, I'm not a big fan of their clothing items, but girls, you must check out gojane fresh shoes! Upon browsing their selection, I am aware that there are many many choices one would not even consider! Look above, however. I purchased that same first pair of brown boots last year from gojane. My price before shipping costs? $26.00! This years price? On sale for $19.99! With shipping and what not, my boots eventually cost me around 35.00, which is nothing compared to prices you find in the mall. My latest purchase? Right below the brown boot, I did purchase the black ankle boot, also known as the "bootie." The price? $26.80! Buyer beware, however, because this site isn't so much a kept secret anymore, especially with rave reviews from the US, expect shipping to take a long time. So be sure to grab your shoes early.

LACK OF COMMENTS
As pointed out by one of my BFFCCs, my template would not allow comment posting on my blog. As I attempt to figure this out (hopefully by this weekend), I've installed a comment box on the side of blog (please see to your left) so in time, please feel free to use that! But be nice, please... only kidding.

In other news, Salon 52's Contessas took place November first. More formally known as the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards, the Contessas are Canada’s longest-running and most prestigious awards honouring excellence and creativity in salons and among salon professionals across Canada. Not only do they focus on hair styling, they also judge on colour, texture, and make-up. The link is posted above, so I urge people to please check out the Salon 52 website because these stylists are talented. We're not talking about your typical "haircut and style" kind of look. The artists volunteer their time to specifically craft their styles on their models heads, are involved in selecting the make-up and wardrobe for their models, and oversee the photoshoots for submission to the Contessas. How would I know, you ask?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/Svu4ZSdSfyI/AAAAAAAAADQ/zOyKw_rcJqY/s320/blog02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403114922551967522"/>Yes, I admit, that was me last year as a submission for Sherlyn Sampang of Winnipeg's Vault Salon and Spa located right in The Exchange. She won Student/Apprentice Hairstylist of the Year last year, and let me tell you, the process was daunting. Sherlyn had to do a series of styles for photograph and submission, and I myself was at the salon for about 12 hours for my styling and shooting alone. Yes, I also admit that that is my hair and it is not a hat as some people have questioned. Feel free to take a look at the site, because I kidd you not, quite a few of the submissions are incredible.

Also a side note, eTalk finally did a segment highlighting one of my favourite fashion websites! Whowhatwear posts up and coming fashion trends, as well as fashion highlights from celebrities and non-celebrities alike. One of my favourite things about whowhatwear is how nearly all the items they feature on their site are available for purchase online! Just shop the store! If you haven't seen on my blog, whowhatwear also releases periodical videos appropriate for trends for the season. So if you're curious, hit that link above and check it out! Groups were to select a sales or marketing issue to investigate and then inform our fellow classmates. The team of Mike C., Karleigh, Steven and I decided to focus on return/exchange policies of various electronic retailers. With input from Kent, we also compared this to purchases made across the border. Needless to say, our subject got a little wide and we had to narrow our focus a little. We decided to outline the return policies, and highlight the important facts that everyone should know, resulting in our project as a little “consumer education lesson.”

We looked at the return/exchange policies of big-boxed retailers Best Buy Canada and Future Shop, as well as independently owned Visions Electronics and local Advance Electronics (links are to their specific policies). According to the employees, the policies usually had a similar outline ranging from 14-30 days and allowing a return or exchange depending on the retailer and their standards. Buyer Beware Number 1: Pay attention to the allotted number of days for return or exchange. These are guidelines set by their head offices and are strict rules they must follow. Asking them to make an exception is asking them to bend their rules, and in most instances, they will deny your return. As said by one of the customer service representatives at Best Buy, majority of exceptions are only due to defective materials. Other than that – the policy is printed and communicated numerous times, so the buyer has no excuse.

Buyer Beware Number 2: Be sure everything is in the box at the time of the return, accompanied by the receipt. The receipt is extremely important, as it is your proof of purchase. Nothing is more questionable to an employee than having a customer attempt to trade an “unmarked” item for cash back. At some locations, even opening and returning an item will result in a restocking fee, usually a percentage set by the retailer for cost of packaging, missing items, etc. At Best Buy and Future Shop, employees say they require the reimbursement for the actual items missing – which can generally be quite a bit of money. For example, an actual replacement charger for, let’s say, a Canon ELPH camera can cost around $130.00. Buyers should remember that if they were to ever decide to purchase a re-boxed item, I’m assuming they’d like to have everything in the box. Which leads me to Buyer Beware Number 3: Examine repackaged items. At Best Buy and Future Shop, items are reduced at least 10% if returned. This can lower if there are missing items or physical damage. At Visions and Advance, however, the reduction is up to the salesperson’s discretion – so try to “haggle” the price! An employee at Visions slyly admits that they are allowed to re-price open box items how high and how low they desire, considering the commission. They might be trying to get you to spend more money than you deserve! Also be sure to inspect every item purchased to make sure that it is in good working condition, and everything is there. This is actually important with all purchases, as described in one of our primary research surveys, a girl tried to purchase a new camera and discovered a work order detailing how it was previous sent out on repair!

Buyer Beware 4: Online purchases have different return policies than in-store policies. As found in our secondary research, at times, products purchased online don’t have any relevance to the in-store policy as they have completely different inventory systems, and also, special on-line deals are set by the manufacturer and cannot be returned in-store. These must be shipped back to the retailer (out of your pocket), with the accompaniment of a record number. The only items that can be returned back to store are items also found at the in-city location, but 100% must be accompanied by a print-out of the electronic receipt.

If you head down to the states to try and swing a deal, Buyer Beware 5: Realize the limits of purchasing electronics in the US. Although popular retailers Target and Wal-Mart US have extensive return policies accompanied by impressive no-receipt programs, once you cross the border back to Canada, the policy stays behind! Say goodbye to both the policy, as well as the manufacturer’s warranty. Also remember that all electronics are subject to duty costs once they cross the border. These additional costs can range from 10-15% depending on the merchandise. Failure to do so can result in having to pay 40% of the electronic(s) you purchased. Price differences between Canada and the US can be substantial, but just take into consideration the exchange rate, duty costs, along side gas and additional fees? You might not be getting all that great of a deal!

Here is a video, starring Mike C., Karleigh and Steven, exemplifying first the wrong return scenario and then the right return scenario. It breaks down what would be best to do, and definitely what to avoid. Excuse me for not being and featured actor in this movie – I’m a little camera shy!

We expanded and focused on these aspects in order to educate the consumers. Although we covered a wide range of scenarios and examples, we believe that considering our demographic, these would be of best interest to the regular Winnipeg shopper. We were able highlight and explain the various (and detailed) return policies of popular Winnipeg retailers, as well as the key facts that buyers should be aware of in the process of purchasing and returning electronic devices. Our group recommends to follow the details of the return policy, and remember to approach and examine every purchase carefully – as they do require, usually, a large sum of money. This is your money and your investment!

CHARGED WITH SHOE STEALING
An interesting topic of the popular and affordable Steve Madden ripping off Alexander McQueen. This only means one thing - fall is nearing! Now although I have loved the past few weeks of beautiful sun (definitely a change from the monsoon-like-season we had this past summer), fall is my most favorite fashion season! The sweaters, the leather, the boots and the leggings are just a few of the items I look forward to when planning a fall wardrobe.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure you ladies have that summer dress or skirt that has since resumed the position of your second child. Fear you not, for if the colour and pattern suit the season there is no need to part ways! Throw on a chunky sweater or cardigan (similar in colour) and a pair of opaque tights/nylons (usually contrasting in colour) and you're set. Be sure to retire those gladiator sandals and opt for a cute ankle boot! AND POSSIBILITY OF NEW RETAIL OPPORTUNITIES? WHAT'S HOLDING US BACK?
Thanks to the Winnipeg Free Press, we have some more development on the "replacement" Canad Inns Stadium - a new home for the bombers (regardless of how they play)!

Bombers' moving day iffy
Retail slump could hold up stadium plan
By: Bartley Kives

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers may be forced to play two more seasons at aging Canad Inns Stadium, as the year-long recession has hampered future owner David Asper's plan to get a new University of Manitoba bowl built by 2011.

Back in April, when Asper's Creswin Properties secured $35 million in federal and provincial funding to build a new home for the Winnipeg Football Club, the deal was contingent upon the real-estate company securing retail tenants for the existing Canad Inns Stadium site, which the city of Winnipeg intends to sell Creswin at full market value.

On Monday, Asper said the recession has slowed the progress of the retail development but said he plans to reveal before the end of September what he has planned for Polo Park.

"What you're going to see is a jaw-dropping retail plan that is unlike anything within hundreds of miles of Winnipeg and is a massive destination," Asper said in an interview. "Progress continues to be made across the board. We are convinced and continue to be convinced the entirety of this project is going to happen."

The future Bomber owner said it's possible Creswin may not meet the retail-assembly timeline announced back in April, but "the value of what we're proposing is so potentially immense" that some delays will not hamper the project, he said.

The complexity of the deal, which involves retail negotiations, consultations with the city, province, Ottawa and the University of Manitoba, and plans for construction projects on either side of Winnipeg, has also proved more difficult than Creswin expected.

"It's ironic. If we had actually been able to do the very first proposal we made in January 2007, we would be playing in the new facility right now. Maybe we were overly optimistic about that proposal. As it morphed, it became more and more complex," Asper said.

"What's a bit frustrating is, measured against the original proposal, is we clearly ran into the worst recession since the Depression at a time when the entire economic engine (for the stadium deal) requires retailers."

While Winnipeg has escaped the worst of the recession, the U.S. retail industry has been hammered by a year of economic decline. Retail observers say Creswin's Polo Park development has been affected because they believe the Winnipeg real-estate company is pursuing high-end U.S. department-stoore chains.

Asper would not confirm this speculation, as he said the deal must be fleshed out before he goes public.

"In spite of the challenges with the U.S. recession, there's been very positive progress," he said. "We've made a commitment to the fans to do this right, and we must do this right once -- the first time."

Asper would not confirm the new stadium could no longer be built by 2011, but such a delay is likely if construction on the stadium does not begin as planned in February 2010, said Ken Hildahl, chairman of the Winnipeg Football Club's board of directors.

The cost of playing an additional year at Canad Inns Stadium "would not be astronomical" to the club, although some capital improvements must be made to the 56-year-old structure every year, Hildahl said.

"A delay of weeks or months on the stadium project would not affect Creswin's deal to purchase Polo Park land from the city or secure $20 million from the province. But a longer delay could affect the release of $15 million from Ottawa for new recreational and athletic facilities at the University of Manitoba, said Manitoba Premier Gary Doer.

"There is some federal money tied in the stimulus package to time, but I'd have to look at the timing of that time," the outgoing premier said.

A federal election may also complicate the issue. The Conservative minority government could fall as soon as the end of the week, as the opposition Liberals plan to defeat the Tories at the first opportunity.

-- With files from Bruce Owen

bartley.kives@freepress.mb.ca

How development evolved
Steps toward the construction of a new home for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers:

November 2006: Canwest executive David Asper says his real-estate company, Creswin Properties, is interested in buying the Winnipeg Football Club and building a new stadium at Polo Park. Asper seeks $80 million from Ottawa and Broadway.

February 2007: The football club launches a formal search for partners to build the new stadium.

May 2007: The club chooses Creswin's Polo Park plan over a rival Canad Inns hotel chain proposal for the Public Markets in St. Boniface.

June 2008: After Ottawa declines to fund a Polo Park stadium, Asper and Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz float a plan to build a new stadium in South Point Douglas. Asper reduces his ask from Ottawa and Broadway to $40 million.

September 2008: Creswin signs letter of understanding to build a football stadium at the University of Manitoba, refurbish University Stadium and build athletic facilities. The city agrees to sell Creswin the site of Canad Inns Stadium at full market value.

April 2009: Ottawa and Broadway agree to spend a combined $35 million on the stadium project, which will see a retail development at Polo Park fund the team and new U of M stadium.

September 2009: The retail marketing, leasing and financing for Creswin's Polo Park development is supposed to wrap up by the end of the month.

Spring 2010: Under the timelines laid out in the April deal, construction on new stadium is supposed to begin and Asper will assume control of the Winnipeg Football Club.

Fall 2010: Under the original timelines, Canad Inns Stadium was slated to be demolished at the end of the 2010 football season. This is now in doubt.

Summer 2011: Under the original timelines, the new U of M football stadium was slated to open in time for the 2011 season. Now, 2012 is looking more likely.

2011-2013: Retail components of new Creswin development at former stadium site at Polo Park slated to open.

-- Sources: Creswin, Winnipeg Football Club

Republished from the Winnipeg Free Press print edition September 15, 2009 A3

A Weekend In Need of Makeovers?

A WEEKEND IN NEED OF MAKEOVERS?
According to the MTV Music Video Awards, yes it was! The talented, rich, famous and obnoxious all gathered to celebrate each other's sweat and toil of work - or yet to critcize it. A few of the looks that happened to catch my eye are found below (thanks to the images from the fashion section of the MTV website.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 269px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9lW-1hD1ZN0/Sq74FK_DvNI/AAAAAAAAACo/5uSiwdHR8v0/s400/blog01s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381511372486196434" />

Lauren Conrad, ex-star of The Hills, is always a favorite of mine - looking simple yet classy in a dress perfect for summer's end. Following to the right is Kanye West. For stealing Taylor Swift's moment I'd like to ask Why in the world did you bring a bottle of Hennessy on the red carpet? That is all. Moving to the bottom left is Lady Gaga, donning quite a get-up, once again. Generally, I myself would prefer something a little less extreme, but what I love about Lady Gaga is her ability to express her own style and rock it without a care. Lastly in the bottom right is The City star Whitney Port. Hailing from the US fashion capital, I assume that she is ahead of the trends? The runways are pouring with corset tops and cut-out dresses, and she definitely looks amazing. With the Winnipeg weather, however, this might be a little to risque. Let me know what you guys think!

In addition to makeovers, Orlando's main tourist attraction is getting a facelift! Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo made the announcement Saturday.

Analysts predict it will re-ignite travel to Orlando, which has lagged in the global recession.

Disney also plans to update Star Tours, the Star Wars-themed ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios. It will debut in 2011. The Fantasyland overhaul will be complete by 2013. Disney declined to say how much it will spend on the projects.

Disney's parks contribute about a third of the giant entertainment company's revenue.

Information from: Orlando Sentinel, http://www.orlandosentinel.com

Salutations to the Style-Interested and the Not

SALUTATIONS TO THE STYLE-INTERESTED AND THE NOT
The touch of a silk-cashmere blend running through your fingers, the comforting sight of neatly folded merchandise on a display table, the all-to familiar sound of the cash register drawer opening to consume your money - these happen to be the feelings and sounds that capture my life.

Whether you're interested in fashion or not, it is inevitable that style and fashion are a part of everyday life.
